  • Plantar Faciitis /  www.heel-that-pain.com  Is a serious, painful, and progressing illness that occurs when the long, flat ligament along the bottom of the foot develops tears and inflammation. Serious cases of plantar fasciitis can possibly lead to ruptures in the ligament. This ligament is called the plantar fascia and it extends your five toes and runs along the bottom of your foot, attaching to your heel. When you walk or run, you land on your heel and raise yourself on your toes as you shift your weight to your other foot, causing all your weight to be held up by your plantar fascia. Such repetitive force can pull the fascia from its attachment on your heel and cause damage and plantar fasciitis.   Un expensive alternatives for the condition: Dr. Scholl's Advantage Arch Supports / www.drugstore.com

  • The piriformis syndrome / www.rice.edu  The piriformis syndrome is a condition in which the piriformis muscle irritates the sciatic nerve, causing pain in the buttocks and referring pain along the course of the sciatic nerve. This referred pain, called "sciatica", often goes down the back of the thigh and/or into the lower back. Patients generally complain of pain deep in the buttocks, which is made worse by sitting, climbing stairs, or performing squats. The piriformis muscle assists in abducting and laterally rotating the thigh. In other words, while balancing on the left foot, move the right leg directly sideways away from the body and rotate the right leg so that the toes point towards the ceiling. This is the action of the right piriformis muscle.

  • Hamstring Injuries / www.rice.edu The hamstring muscles are located in the back of the thigh and injuries can be acute or chronic. Sprinting subjects these muscles to high tension loads and sudden tears can occur.

  • Psoas Muscles and Abdominal Exercises for Back Pain / www.somatics.com Common opinion notwithstanding, the proper purpose of abdominal exercises is to improve coordination of the abdominal muscles with the other muscles of the trunk and legs (which include the psoas muscles), to improve alignment, and not to strengthen the back (a nonsensical proposition if one thinks about it). When the psoas muscles achieve their proper length and responsiveness, they stabilize the lumbar spine, giving the feeling of better support and "strength," and cause the spine and abdomen to fall back, giving the appearance of "strong" abdominal muscles.

  • TMJ's  TMJ is the commonly used acronym for temporomandibular joint disorder. The pain associated with TMJ is thought to be caused by displacement of the cartilage where the lower jaw connects to the skull causing pressure and stretching of the associated sensory nerves.

  • Meniscus Tear / Click here: Meniscus tear - MayoClinic.com  A meniscus tear is a common knee injury. Meniscal cartilage is a wedge-like rubbery cushion that curves like the letter "C' at the inside and outside of the knee. Each knee joint has two menisci (plural for "meniscus"). This cartilage helps stabilize the knee joint and provides cushioning between the thighbone (femur) and shinbone (tibia).

  • Golf Elbow / http://www.golfers-elbow.com/golferselbow.htm  Medial Epicondylitis is usually referred to as "Golfer's Elbow", not because only golfers develop the ailment, but because that activity is a common cause of the problem. There are many other activities that can result in Golfer's Elbow such as working out at the gym or simply working in front of a computer for prolonged periods. Each of these activities use the same muscles repetitively and can result in the inflammation of muscles, ligaments & tendons. Two additional strains, Lateral Epicondylitis (more commonly known as Tennis Elbow) and Bursitis, are often mistaken for Medial Epicondylitis. Before we delve into the options that are available for relieving & preventing the pain...let’s look at the distinguishing characteristics of each of these 3 ailments.
